More Wildly Inappropriate Valentine’s Day Cards for Children

Posted 16 Feb, 2008 under Culture by Shea Gunther | 18 Comments

wet-and-wild-small.jpgSome of you felt that my concerns about the “Wet and Wild” Valentines Day card that my five year old got in a packet of cards were a bit overblown. I was accused of both having my mind in the gutter and being a prudish Christian blowhard (guilty on the first charge, couldn’t be further from the second charge bless the FSM). “Idiot” was another popular insult thrown my way.

Well you are right. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a kids Valentines Day Card that says “Wet and Wild for you, Valentine”. Along those lines I’ve taken a bit of time to work up some designs of my own. I’ll be working on a few more for next year with the hopes of building my own Valentines Day card business. Check ‘em out and tell me what you think.

Hey, the kids won’t know what they REALLY mean, so it’s kosher, right?

Harry Potter Becomes a Real Boy and Introduces Quidditch to College Kids

I have to say, if I were a Harry-Potter-loving college aged dork, I’d be pretty damn excited to read about the RL (Real Life) Quidditch being played at colleges like Vassar (NY) and Middlebury (VT), who even hosted a big tournament, sans Port Keys. Here’s the highlight vid from YouTube:

Seriously, this looks like of fun. I could see this actually taking off, the FSM knows there’s enough Harry Potter fans to recruit from. The rules of RL Quidditch are pretty simple, each team has Chasers who try to throw a deflated soccer ball through three goals, Beaters who bludgeon the other team with red colored soccer balls, a Keeper who tries to protect the goals, and Seekers who have to chase down the Snitch, a fit guy dressed in yellow who has the range of the whole campus to run around in to avoid capture. Watch Vassar’s video for a more indepth breakdown of the rules and game play.

Pure Dork Awesome.

One Thousand Tiny Things to Hate #80: Photos of Girls with Their Friends

hottie-greek-girls.JPGA quick bit from One Thousand Tiny Things I Hate- #0080. PHOTOS OF GIRLS WITH THEIR FRIENDS. Here’s a snip, head over and read the whole thing, it’s hilarious.

Fact: the heads of female friends, when a camera is introduced, attract each other like magnets. Hence the photography phenomenon that is ‘the Siamese Headshot’, wherein two or more girls act as though their faces have been stapled together at the cheek.

It doesn’t matter where they are — in a club, in a restaurant, standing in front of a pair of double doors…

Inappropriate Valentine Card for Children: Wet and Wild for You

Posted 13 Feb, 2008 under Culture by Shea Gunther | 34 Comments

wet-and-wild.jpg

Is it me, or is this Valentine grossly inappropriate? I’m certainly no Puritanical prude, but a card that says “Wet and Wild for you, Valentine” doesn’t seem to be the right thing for my five year old daughter to bring to school. My wife saw this in the pack of cards she bought them for school and showed it to me with a raised eyebrow. We pulled the offending cards from the collection and I’m trying to figure out something funny to do with them.

OS X LeopardUsing Mac OS X Leopard? This is for you.

Apple’s long-anticipated 10.5.2 update — featuring a slew of stability and performance fixes — is ready for installation. In addition to third-party application improvements, 10.5.2 features a new view option for Stacks in the Dock (showing a folder, not its contents), Dashboard and networking tweaks, and bug fixes for virtually all of OS X’s core programs.

Details are here.

As usual, the update is free and available via OS X’s built-in software update function. It should also be available soon as a standalone installer.

See the 2008 Grammys in 60 Seconds Flat!

Grammy awardSo you missed the Grammies, huh?

You’re not alone. Even though the show’s producers cut the on-TV awards down to eleven major presentations (there are over hundred Grammys each year), the bloated four-hour broadcast may have pulled its lowest ratings in a decade.

Not that there weren’t some great performances. Amy Winehouse belted out a solid middle-of-the-night set from a London studio, showcasing the yin and yang of her ferocious vocals and fragile real-life presence. Morris Day and the Time reunited after 15 years to remind us how they stole Purple Rain from Prince (a good trick). Tina Turner is still full of sass and power, and the Foo Fighters may be the best Rock act currently touring.

But the folks at Mahalo — a snarfd favorite –have made it easy to catch up on the Grammys and save 3 hours and59 minutes of your life. It’s the Grammys in 60 seconds flat:

If any of the acts catch your interest, you can see all of the 2008 Grammy performances at Mahalo, too.

Tyra Banks Threatens Litigation to Muzzle Cancer Patient

tyra1.jpgTyra Banks is a pants pooping bitchbag of a lady. She’s threatening to sue Jodi Hughes, a cancer patient who had a bad run of things when she appeared on the Tyra show to keep her quite about the experience.

Our favorite non-green celeb blog Pop Crunch has it:

Thirty-nine year old Jodi Hughes was ecstatic when she discovered that her children, seventeen year old Jordan and ten year old Nick, had secretly submitted her name for a “Holiday Girl Party!” makeover on an episode of the Tyra Banks Show after she’d been diagnosed with Stage Four cervical cancer and lupus. Jodi has been left begging for an apology after what she claims was humiliation and mistreatment at the hands of Tyra.

From the moment the family of three stepped off of the plane, they sensed there would be trouble:

“Jordan and Nick-who is legally blind-were left sitting on a curb outside the studio lot for hours with no food, no phone, and no money while Jodi underwent her “transformation,”” according to a National Enquirer report.

Poor form Tyra, poor form.

Old Hotness: E Pluribus Unum- Freakonomics Wants a New Slogan for the U.S.A.

Posted 8 Feb, 2008 under Culture by Shea Gunther | Leave a Comment

penny.jpgFreakonomics is having a contest to find a new six-word motto for the U.S.A. They were inspired by a NY Times article about England’s search for a motto, or “statement of value” and will be giving a boatload of Freakonoics swag to the winning motto. E Pluribus Unum is good and all, but doesn’t have much punch to it and I bet 19 out of 20 Americans have no idea what it actually means (Out of Many, One).

Here are a few of my favorites so far:

Just like Canada, with Better Bacon

All your oil belong to us.

Some are more equal than others.

That looks nice. It’s mine now”

America: bombing you, suing each other.

war=peace freedom=slavery ignorance=strength

One nation, in spite of itself

Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness, Asterisk.

One Nation to Rule Them All

Happiness is mandatory. Are You Happy?

In gold we trust, a lot.

You Call It Torture, We Don’t.

Liberty for all, when its convenient

What do you think? Do you have any good slogans to add to the pot?

Evil Indian Real Estate Developer Blasts Family Who Won’t Sell Out, Literally

Posted 7 Feb, 2008 under News by Shea Gunther | Leave a Comment

developer.jpgWow, I thought American real estate developers were scumbags. They’ve got nothing on Indian developer Kashinath Jaiswal who pumped natural gas into the bedroom of a guy whose lot he was trying to buy to tear down and build on. In the middle of the night the gas was ignited.

Here’s what the Times of India has on it:

It transpires that Jaiswal, who lives in a flat next door, was trying to get the plot vacated. While some of the tenants agreed to leave, others like Bahadur Shaw, the man whose room was gassed, refused to budge. Shaw’s extended family occupied three rooms in the corner of the courtyard; his was the cornermost room where he lived with his wife Kewla and daughter Deepika, while the adjacent tenements were occupied by his brothers.

Wednesday being Bengal bandh, Shaw — a confectionery supplier — prepared for a busy Thursday. Before turning in that night, he piled up his baked goods near the entrance, planning to make an early start. But around 3.30 am on Thursday, people in the neighbourhood woke up to Shaw’s screams. They rushed out to find him in the courtyard, his body engulfed in flames. “I rubbed my eyes and tried my best to snuff out the flames. Then I looked inside the room, and saw Shaw’s wife and daughter lying charred on the bed,” said neighbour Javed Ali.

While Kewla was dead, Deepika is barely alive. A search led cops to a two-feet wide drain between the plot in contention and the adjacent one where Jaiswal lived — the drain passed right behind Shaw’s room, which had an opening for waste water to pass into the drain. The cops found an LPG cylinder in the drain with its hose sticking into Shaw’s room through the small opening. The cylinder was empty.

Jebus, what a evil f*ck. He makes Donald Trump look like a saint.
