Vienna’s Vegetable Orchestra Plays with Their Food

VeggieThese folks pretty clearly were never taught as children not to play with their food.

Meet the Vegetable Orchestra. It’s safe to say they’re the only organized musical group featuring instruments fashioned exclusively from veggies: leek violins, pumpkin and gourd drums, carrot recorders, and trumpets made from fresh bell peppers.

The 11-member, Vienna-based combo has been turning produce into music since 1998. Although they hail from a city synonymous with great classical music, the Vegetable Orchestra feels free to explore jazz, dub, free-form, and clicks ‘n’ cuts styles. Their playlist is as unusual as the orchestra’s instrumentation.

So how does it sound? Vegetable instruments have their own timbre, and there’s no confusing the Vegetable Orchestra with the Vienna Philharmonic. Have a listen for yourself …
