Horrors! The World’s Ugliest, Coolest Rug

You might unconsciously step around its toothy head to avoid being bitten. Stretched out across the floor, its dead mouth in a half grin, this rug looks nothing like the bearskin of old. Your immediate thought is of the mighty battle which reduced this beast to floor covering — and the unnerving possibility that its cousin may still be still be on the prowl, bent on revenge.
Welcome to the decidedly odd home furnishing vision of designer Joshua Longo.
Longoland, his website, is a menagerie of the grotesque. Wing back chairs are covered in scaly, woolen monster skin. Half poodle, half armadillo critters leer from behind rows of snaggly teeth. And then there are those monster rugs. It’s Dr. Seuss with a laudanum chaser.
Longo describes his work as “fabric manipulation.” There’s a lot of attention to texture: his monster skin rugs are crafted from bushed cashmere, wool, and modeling clay. Stuffed creatures bristle with faux fur.
So what do these endearing little horrors cost? If you have to ask, you’re probably better off trapping a beastie of your own — prices are quoted per inquiry.
But these furnishings are for those who place uniqueness above utility. It’s design with a hint of danger: ugly, inviting, and impossibly cool.
