“Dude, I have the best idea. Let’s put the album online and let people pay whatever they want!”

“Duuude, that’s killer!”

“I know man, people will shit when they hear about this. We’ll be heroes on Boing Boing. Hey, pass that over cheech, you’ve been holding for the past five minutes.”

“Doh! My bad.”

“You’re still holding…”

I imagine that’s approximately how the conversation went when Radiohead manager Chris Hufford and his co-manager Bryce Edge came up with the idea for their well published scheme to let fans pay whatever they want to download their recent album “In Rainbows“. They just revealed to the New York Times that they were stoned when they came up with the industry changing sales plan.

Mr. Hufford said that he and Bryce Edge, Radiohead’s other manager, had come up with the pay-what-you-want plan during a stoned philosophical conversation about the value of music. They had initially proposed releasing only the download and the deluxe box, but the band overruled them, noting that many of its fans are neither downloaders nor elite collectors.

Pure awesome.
